What do y’all call these cookies?

chocolate crackled cookies

When I was little, we called them “Shadow” cookies, and they were one of my absolute favorites! We always made them with unsweetened chocolate squares. Now that I’m all grown up, I’ve heard them called many things like even “Snow on the Mountain” cookies. No matter what they are called, they are delicious!

I purchased a bottle of Crisco vegetable oil the other day, and this recipe was stuck to the neck of the bottle. The Crisco was NOT on sale, and I would usually have settled for a store brand. The little yellow recipe card with the most amazing looking cookie sold it for me, though. Yes, I was a victim of marketing at its finest.

Trust me. I’m an expert on advertising ploys after catching up on four seasons of Mad Men episodes this summer. (Season 5 is not out on Netflix or Amazon yet. BOO!)

These particular cookies are made with cocoa instead of unsweetened chocolate squares and have chocolate chips baked inside. The cookies are rolled in both granulated sugar and then powdered sugar making the outside crispy while the center is like a fudgey brownie.

These “Crackled” Cookies are my new favorite. I’m sorry, “Shadow” Cookies, but you knew we couldn’t be together forever.

Now, go watch Mad Men, and enjoy one of these delightfully fudgey and deliciously chocolatey “whatever you want to call them” cookies!
